{"id":445,"date":"2008-08-01T01:01:09","date_gmt":"2008-08-01T06:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mccambridge.org\/blog\/?p=445"},"modified":"2022-09-11T00:40:38","modified_gmt":"2022-09-11T00:40:38","slug":"yellowstone-trip-day-2-yellowstone-is-on-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.mccambridge.org\/blog\/2008\/08\/yellowstone-trip-day-2-yellowstone-is-on-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Yellowstone Trip: Day 2: Yellowstone is on Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jared and I reached Big Sky, Montana, today, after another lengthy road leg of our trip.\u00a0 We only covered 624 miles today, according to Google, but it felt twice as long as yesterday, since we spent so much of it twisting up and down mountains.\u00a0 It was beautiful, but it was long.<\/p>\n<p>To keep things interesting (especially since Montana is largely lots of open sky that I have already seen before), we took I-90 only as far as about Sheridan, WY, and then took smaller Wyoming highways across to Yellowstone National Park, went through the park, and finally northward to Big Sky:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=d&amp;saddr=Wall,+S+Dakota&amp;daddr=Powell,+WY+to:West+Yellowstone,+MT+to:Big+Sky,+MT&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;mra=ls&amp;sll=44.449468,-106.66626&amp;sspn=4.90953,9.777832&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;s=AARTsJowmMWpboqLpe3qj1_ukGC2v75B7A&amp;ll=44.465151,-106.677246&amp;spn=5.4884,9.338379&amp;z=6&amp;output=embed\"><\/iframe><br \/><small><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=d&amp;saddr=Wall,+S+Dakota&amp;daddr=Powell,+WY+to:West+Yellowstone,+MT+to:Big+Sky,+MT&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;mra=ls&amp;sll=44.449468,-106.66626&amp;sspn=4.90953,9.777832&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=44.465151,-106.677246&amp;spn=5.4884,9.338379&amp;z=6&amp;source=embed\" style=\"color:#0000FF;text-align:left\">View Larger Map<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>The biggest surprise of the day (other than how pretty the Big Horn National Forest was) was reaching a gas station just outside Yellowstone National Park and realizing that the &#8220;clouds&#8221; we were seeing in the sky over the mountains were actually plumes of <em>smoke<\/em>&#8230; as in, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casperstartribune.net\/articles\/2008\/07\/31\/ap-state-wy\/d92955bo0.txt\">Yellowstone is on fire<\/a>.\u00a0 We drove past the &#8220;Gunbarrel&#8221; fire burning between Cody, WY, and Yellowstone, and were forced to detour on a longer route to the West Entrance due to a road closure caused by the &#8220;LeHardy&#8221; fire burning within the park itself.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have my pictures ready to go yet, we didn&#8217;t reach Big Sky until after 9pm due to the slow going through Yellowstone and a surprise bit of construction a mere 3 miles south of the exit we wanted for Big Sky itself :-\/\u00a0 <del datetime=\"2008-08-04T07:37:09+00:00\">I&#8217;ll put some up tomorrow.<\/del><br \/>\n<ins datetime=\"2008-08-04T07:37:09+00:00\"><br \/>\n<strong>Update:<\/strong> Photos are now uploaded!
